Este hallazgo corrobora la rutacostera”. Es probable que hayansido las encías. Décadas de pequeñas heridas sin tratar, de fragmentos deconchas y de arena encarnándose, lastimando. Es posible que las infecciones lohayan golpeado, quizás dañando sus válvulas cardiacas, volviéndolo demasiadodébil para la vida de hombre de mar. Ya había sido un tipo inusualmente longevopara su tiempo: con cerca de 45 años, doblaba en edad lo esperable entre lossuyos, los primeros habitantes del continente americano.
Ahora su cráneo está en la mano de Eugenio Aspillaga, con 60 años uno de losantropólogos físicos más importantes del país. Cuenta esas cosas parado en unode los laboratorios subterráneos de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la U.de Chile, donde dirige el departamento de Antropología. Frente a él, en unacaja, cubiertos por espuma, cientos de los primeros huesos de Chile le dicencosas.
Levanta el cráneo, dejando que el sol que se filtra por una ventana caiga sobreél, revelando el tono madera que genera estar ciento doce siglos bajo la playade Los Vilos.
-Esta lesión se produce por la otitis -dice, apuntando un agujero-. Tiene unainfección crónica en el canal auditivo. Una lesión común en la gente de mar.
Luego repara en sus dientes, que son pocos, dos menos de los que salieron de latierra, enviados a tres laboratorios en Estados Unidos para chequear suantigüedad.
-Lo importante es la dieta, y éste no tiene tantas caries como losagroalfareros. Los estudios arrojaron que su dieta era de peces y lobosmarinos. Y eso que fue hallado a sólo 300 metros de Quereo, otro sitio donde seencontró megafauna. Pero él seguía comiendo de la costa.
Aspillaga habla con el entusiasmo de quien contradice lo establecido: encontraren Los Vilos a un pescador de hace 11.230 años agrega dudas a la tradicionalteoría de que los primeros habitantes americanos habrían bajado únicamente, unavez cruzado el estrecho de Bering, persiguiendo a los grandes mamíferos por elcontinente. Al menos este tipo, explica, parece haber tenido más sentido común:seguramente bajó en canoa.
-Hace 40 mil años ya había embarcaciones, en esa época se habitó Australia. Nohay ninguna razón para no pensar que estas personas pudieron haberlo hecho.
Una alumna lo mira de reojo mientras va sacando de la caja costillas, pequeñosfragmentos del rostro, un trozo de pelvis. Enumera lo que ve: una costillarota, lesiones en los codos por cargar mucho peso -seguramente bolsas demariscos-, parásitos intestinales. Todos los pequeños dolores con que murió elprimer chileno conocido, que hace cuatro años le llegó en una caja a suoficina, en brazos del arqueólogo y también profesor de la facultad DonaldJackson, a sus 54 años responsable de 400 excavaciones en la zona de Los Vilos.
Se habían conocido cuatro décadas antes, cuando Aspillaga era ayudante delaboratorio en la recién fundada carrera de Antropología en la U. de Chile, yJackson un escolar que llegaba en pantalones cortos a mostrarle las puntas deflecha que tallaba imitando a los primeros hombres del continente. Pero ahora,en invierno de 2010, lo que traía a su oficina era una caja llena de huesos.Estaba entusiasmado: había encontrado en Los Vilos el esqueleto de lo que leparecía un cazador recolector, y pensaba que podía llegar a tener unos nuevemil años de antigüedad. De estar en lo correcto, con esa edad ya hubiera sidoel más antiguo jamás encontrado en Chile, y uno de los ocho más tempranos de uncontinente poco dado a los hallazgos de cuerpos prehistóricos.
Aspillaga abrió la caja y, le pareció que sí, que ese esqueleto amarillo sinrostro parecía lo suficientemente viejo para creer en los cálculos de su amigo.Nunca pensó que seestuviera quedando dos milenios corto. MISTERIO DE LOS MILENIOS
En el estrechopasillo subterráneo hay cientos de cajas, todas repletas de huesos. La mayoríaindica un lugar y una fecha específicos. En otras sólo dice “varios cráneos”.César Méndez, arqueólogo de 37 años y coinvestigador de Jackson desde hace 16años en Los Vilos, abre una, echa un vistazo a unos huesos silenciosos, y la vuelvea cerrar. Dice que nadie sabe cuántas cajas hay en realidad, pero son miles.Las tienen en containers, en bodegas, en otros pasillos. Un arqueólogo podríahacer una carrera completa investigando sólo entre ellas, pero no encontraría anadie más antiguo que el “Individuo 1”.
Así lo bautizó Méndez, poco dado al sentimentalismo arqueológico, aun cuandofueron sus manos las que lo encontraron en la tierra. A diferencia de suscompañeros de equipo -entre los que también están el paleoecólogo AntonioMaldonado, el geólogo Ismael Murillo y la conservadora Roxana Seguel-, nunca lohan entusiasmado los restos humanos. Le interesa lo que generalmente tienenalrededor: los objetos cotidianos, los instrumentos de cocina, la forma en quelos cazadores de deshacían de su basura. Eso lo motivó especialmente aparticipar en 2008 en los trabajos en Los Rieles, un sitio con conchales -capasde conchas formadas hace 6 mil años- cerca de la costa. La Municipalidad de LosVilos iba a instalar por allí una tubería para sacar los desechos, y lespidieron un rescate arqueológico.
Habían trabajado con Jackson en centenares de otros sitios -el más relevante,en 2004, en Santa Julia, donde se anotaron un golpe internacional al encontrarpuntas de flechas de 13 mil años de antigüedad, idénticas a las encontradas enNorteamérica, pero sin restos humanos-, y éste parecía uno más. Su objetivo,más modesto, era estudiar cómo los antiguos desechaban las conchas de loco, ypara eso decidieron hacer dos piscinas de 60 centímetros de profundidad. Unatarde, cuando ya habían cumplido una semana sacando conchas, un ayudante dijo“aquí hay algo”, y él se acercó a desenterrar, de abajo de un montículo delocos, lo que parecía un hueso. Sin mucho entusiasmo, el arqueólogo sacó unatibia de la tierra, la puso sobre la suya y les dijo a los demás que era unhombre adulto, de algo así como un metro setenta. Le avisaron a Donald Jackson,y éste dio la orden de seguir excavando y dejar ese montículo para el final.
Para alegría de Méndez, surgieron algunas cosas: una punta de lanza dentada ylos restos de lo que parecía una fogata ceremonial. También huesoscorrespondientes a otros cinco individuos, enterrados a poca distancia unos deotros. En la mañana del décimo día, se decidieron a destapar el montículo. Loque encontraron fue un esqueleto en posición fetal, sin ajuar ni adornos,misteriosamente completo. Los resultados de las pruebas arrojaron que setrataba de un hombre de entre 11.230 y 12.410 años de antigüedad, el mástemprano jamás encontrado en Chile o en el continente, según el caso. Pero loque a Méndez le llamó la atención fue otra cosa: cada uno de los seisindividuos había sido enterrado en un milenio distinto, en el mismo lugar. Esaidea no se la ha podido sacar de la cabeza.
-Seis individuos, uno por milenio, en el mismo lugar. Esto no es un cementerio.¿Era tan fuerte la memoria oral para que por algún motivo enterraran a alguienallí cada mil años?
La pregunta queda sin respuesta. Un mail entrando a su computador llama suatención: es de un desconocido que le avisa que acaba de encontrar un esqueletodebajo de un conchal en un campo de Puchuncaví. Dice que lo vio en la prensa.Que piensa que éste es de la misma época.
-Tendré que ir este fin de semana a pegar un vistazo -dice, con una mediasonrisa-. Este individuo abrió la puerta a que haya muchos más antiguos enotros lados.
Cuando supo que tenía al potencial esqueleto más antiguo del continente en susmanos, Donald Jackson decidió hacerle pruebas de carbono 14 en treslaboratorios distintos de Estados Unidos. De los tres resultados, que suelenvariar por lo sensible de la técnica, decidió publicar el más conservador,11.230 años, en la revista internacional Journal of Island & CoastalArchaeology. Había cumplido un sueño como arqueólogo, encontrar el individuo deese tiempo más completo del continente, luego de décadas rastreando sus puntasde flecha y desechos. Pero el fetiche de la antigüedad pronto quedó relegadopor la evidencia incuestionable de que se trataba de un pescador. Eso, entérminos de teorías de poblamiento continental, eran palabras mayores.
Jackson cuenta esas cosas en su departamento, mientras revisa unos de sustantos papers sobre Los Vilos, la zona a la que ha dedicado los últimos 25 añosde su carrera. La misma por la que solía caminar durante las tardes de su niñezbuscando puntitas de flechas, y donde inició una obsesión que lo llevaría aestudiar Arqueología en México, y luego a transformarse en unas de las puntasde lanza de la escena nacional. Entre sus muchos hallazgos, reconoce, laposibilidad de reforzar que el poblamiento de América pudo ser tanto en canoascomo por tierra sería uno de los más grandes de su carrera.
-Este descubrimiento demuestra que al menos había un grupo que dependía de losrecursos marinos hace 11 mil años. Esta gente comía tanto pescado como untiburón, y este individuo lo viene a comprobar por primera vez. Este hallazgocorrobora la ruta costera.
Donald Jackson reconoce que algunas veces ha soñado con esta gente, en la costade Los Vilos que él tantas veces ha recorrido, y que hace 11.230 años ya lucíacasi exactamente como luce ahora. De fondo, una punta de flecha tallada por susmanos adorna el lugar.
