Trataré de explicarlo en términos simples, esperando que alguien lo pueda
complementar u hacer observaciones.
Un onda Kelvin es un forma de energía (en forma de onda) que se origina al
otro lado del Pacífico (cerca a Indonesia) y se propaga en dirección hacia
Sudamérica siguiendo la línea ecuatorial y exactamente por la termoclina.
Demora entre 8 a 12 semanas en cruzar el Pacífico antes de llegar hasta el
borde occidental de Sudamérica, pasando de ser una "onda Kelvin
ecuatorial" a una "onda Kelvin costera". Podemos monitorear
indirectamente su avance con ayuda de las anomalías subsuperficales,
profundización de la isoterma de 20ºC, altimetría y contenido calórico, a
lo largo de la línea ecuatorial.
¿Cómo se forman?
La onda Kelvin se forma por la interacción que hay entre el océano y la
atmósfera. Cuando los vientos del este (los que soplan hacia Australia) se
debilitan y hay una "explosión" de los vientos del oeste (los que soplan
hacia Sudamérica allá entre los 140ºE - 160ºE) se produce un "impulso" por
parte del viento que se traslada a las capas subsuperficiales del océano y
esto produce que una onda o tren de ondas partan desde este lado del
Pacífico.
¿Por qué viajan en la termoclina?
Recordemos cuando estamos en la playa, vemos las OLAS que están "encima"
del agua ¿correcto?, bueno en realidad lo que estamos observando son ONDAS
que viajan en varias direcciones sobre la INTERFASE oceáno-atmósfera, es
decir, viajan en esa "capa" en donde se juntan dos fluidos de diferente
densidad. De la misma forma, la termoclina representa esa interfase entre
la capa superficial del océano y la capa profunda de la misma, es por esto
que las ondas Kelvin viajan en ella, en la termoclina.
Los efectos en el Perú son:
- Profundización de la termoclina, por lo tanto posibilidad de
profundización de los cardúmenes de anchoveta.
- Aumento de la temperatura superficial del mar, traducido en anomalías
positivas.
- Dependiendo de la intensidad y otros factores, pueden ser precursores de
un El Niño.
- Efectos en el ecosistema marino en otras especies distintas a la
anchoveta. etc.
Habrían quizá muchas cosas más que decir sobre las ondas Kelvin, como por
ejemplo que no son exclusividad del océano sino que pueden ocurrir en la
