Podríamos decir que el conocimiento y la conservación de la biodiversidad son elementos clave y estratégicos en el desarrollo de las actuales sociedades, por conclusión la capacitación en estas áreas del conocimiento tiene especial importancia. Sin embargo el conocimiento de la biodiversidad marina en el Perú no ha seguido el ritmo que han mantenido las investigaciones en los ambientes terrestres. A pesar de ser uno de los mares más fértiles y productivos del mundo por sus sistemas de afloramiento y uno de los países de mayor producción pesquera, el conocimiento de la biodiversidad marina en general puede considerarse pobre y en particular el desconocimiento o poco conocimiento de la taxonomía y sistemática de las especies constituye una evidente desventaja para el uso sustentable de los recursos marinos en el Perú. <BR>Los poliquetos son los invertebrados con mayor abundancia y biomasa en los fondos marinos, distribuidos en diferentes ambientes que van desde las aguas continentales, estuariales, las zonas litorales hasta las profundidades oceánicas. Se registran más de 16000 especies, muchas de ellas relacionadas directamente a la actividad del hombre, como especies de cultivos, parasitas de especies cultivadas y especies de <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">fouling</I>. Muchos poliquetos son investigados por su potencial uso en la industria farmacológica, alimenticia y como indicadores de calidad ambiental.
