<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class=yiv1961163330MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: #1f497d; FONT-SIZE: 14pt">La producción pesquera mundial ha crecido dramáticamente durante las últimas décadas, principalmente por la acelerada evolución de la producción en acuicultura. De acuerdo con el estudio “El estado de la Pesca y Acuicultura Mundial 2012”, publicado recientemente por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO, por su sigla en inglés), la producción pesquera mundial, que considera la producción en acuicultura y captura, creció un promedio de 3.2% entre 1961 y el 2009, superando por mucho el crecimiento poblacional medio en ese periodo.</SPAN></div>

<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class=yiv1961163330MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: #1f497d; FONT-SIZE: 14pt">El estudio destaca que durante el 2010 la producción pesquera total fue de 148.5 millones de toneladas, de las cuales 40.3% fueron bajo esquemas de acuicultura. Para el 2011, de acuerdo con estimaciones del organismo, la producción pesquera mundial totalizó en 154 millones de toneladas, un incremento de 3.7% anual. El 41.3% de la producción corresponde a la acuicultura. </SPAN></div>

<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class=yiv1961163330MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: #1f497d; FONT-SIZE: 14pt">Actualmente, se estima que alrededor de 600 especies acuáticas son producidas en alrededor de 190 países bajo la modalidad de acuicultura. Durante el 2010, el valor de la producción bajo este esquema se sitúa en 119,400 millones de dólares.</SPAN></div>

<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class=yiv1961163330MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: #1f497d; FONT-SIZE: 14pt">En las últimas tres décadas, la producción en acuicultura se ha expandido 12 veces, con una tasa promedio anual de 8.8 por ciento. Sin embargo, durante la última década el crecimiento se ha desacelerado. </SPAN></div>

<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class=yiv1961163330MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: #1f497d; FONT-SIZE: 14pt">Por otro lado, la producción pesquera de captura, aún la actividad que mayor volumen de producción aporta, presenta una estancada evolución, ante las diferentes presiones económicas y ambientales que enfrenta la actividad. Entre las principales vulnerabilidades que afronta la producción en acuicultura destacan las enfermedades y condiciones ambientales. </SPAN></div>

<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class=yiv1961163330MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: #1f497d; FONT-SIZE: 14pt">Por ejemplo, durante el 2011, la producción de camarón en Mozambique fue prácticamente eliminada por un brote del síndrome de la mancha blanca. De igual manera, durante el 2010, China, principal productor mundial en acuicultura, tuvo pérdidas de 1.4 millones de toneladas por fenómenos climáticos, contaminación y enfermedades.</SPAN></div>

<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class=yiv1961163330MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: #1f497d; FONT-SIZE: 14pt">La actividad pesquera primaria, tanto captura como acuicultura, representa una de las actividades socioeconómicas más importantes a nivel mundial, toda vez que ofrecen sustento y trabajo a alrededor de 54.8 millones de personas alrededor del mundo. </SPAN></div>

<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify" class=yiv1961163330MsoNormal><SPAN style="COLOR: #1f497d; FONT-SIZE: 14pt">Aún más cuando se consideran los empleos indirectos que genera esta actividad, en toda la cadena de valor, como procesamiento, empaque y comercialización, el número de personas empleadas asciende hasta 820 millones de personas, 12% de la población mundial. La gran importancia de la actividad pesquera es innegable. </SPAN></div>
