Tuvieron que pasar millones de años y decenas de procesos para que lo tuviera y así permitiera el origen de la vida.<o:p style="line-height: 1.22em;"></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; line-height: 1.2em;"><font face="Calibri" style="line-height: 1.22em;">Hoy, el calentamiento global y la contaminación están causando que las zonas anóxicas (sin oxígeno) reaparezcan en varios lugares del planeta, una de las cuales se encuentra frente a las costas de Perú y Chile, específicamente en Iquique.<o:p style="line-height: 1.22em;"></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; line-height: 1.2em;"><font face="Calibri" style="line-height: 1.22em;">Así lo revela un estudio internacional liderado por Osvaldo Ulloa, biólogo marino del Centro de Investigación Oceanográfica Copas, de la U. de Concepción, cuyos resultados fueron publicados en Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.<o:p style="line-height: 1.22em;"></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; line-height: 1.2em;"><font face="Calibri" style="line-height: 1.22em;">Ulloa dice que se trata de un proceso que se presenta desde hace 15 mil años en aguas sub-superficiales, que son las que van desde los 50 a los 400 metros de profundidad. Pero hasta antes de este estudio, no se pensaba que pudieran existir zonas completamente sin oxígeno en mar abierto, menos tan cercanas a la superficie, como lo que se observó frente a las costas chilenas. “Cuando el oxígeno disminuye, los peces pierden su hábitat y mueren o se alejan, pues no son capaces de subsistir. Sólo los microorganismos, principalmente bacterias y arqueas, pueden hacerlo”, explica el investigador.<o:p style="line-height: 1.22em;"></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; line-height: 1.2em;"><font face="Calibri" style="line-height: 1.22em;">La pérdida de oxígeno en el agua de mar se puede deber a fenómenos de gran escala, como los climáticos, que afectan a grandes extensiones del océano y tanto a aguas costeras como oceánicas (profundas). Pero también a fenómenos locales, como la contaminación por escurrimiento de fertilizantes, que afectan principalmente a zonas costeras, explica Ulloa. “El problema es que estamos alterando de tal manera el planeta, que esto produce cambios de ambos fenómenos y los efectos del primero hacen que los del segundo se agudicen”, dice.<o:p style="line-height: 1.22em;"></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; line-height: 1.2em;"><font face="Calibri" style="line-height: 1.22em;">A eso se suma que los modelos de predicción dicen que debido al calentamiento global, el océano seguirá perdiendo oxígeno. Por eso, Ulloa dice que hacia el futuro, estas zonas anóxicas se expandirán y que en algunas de ellas, incluso, se acumulará hidrógeno sulfurado (gas tóxico), como en el Mar Negro.<o:p style="line-height: 1.22em;"></o:p></font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; line-height: 1.2em;"><font face="Calibri" style="line-height: 1.22em;">“Este estudio nos permitirá realizar mejores predicciones, sobre todo considerando que hubo períodos en que los océanos estaban oxigenados y se volvieron anóxicos, lo que estuvo asociado con extinciones masivas. Eso es importante tenerlo en cuenta.
