de tiburones punta negra muertos cerca de Isla Cabuya<BR></FONT>(14 de marzo del
2013 - Tibás, San José)<BR><BR>El pasado 3 de marzo, el foto-reportero y biólogo
canadiense Nick Hawkins descubrió<BR>más de 80 cabezas y cuerpos de tiburones
punta negra (Carcharhinus limbatus) al<BR>oeste de Isla Cabuya, en dirección a
la Reserva Natural Absoluta Cabo Blanco. El<BR>hallazgo se produjo cuando
Hawkins se encontraba explorando durante una sesión<BR>fotográfica para un
proyecto de conservación en la Península de Nicoya.<BR><BR>La gran mayoría de
los tiburones eran de reducida talla lo que podría indicar que<BR>esta zona es
una área importante de crianza para esta especie, donde se alimentan<BR>hasta
iniciar sus migraciones hacia aguas más abiertas.<BR><BR>Testimonio de Nick
Hawkins; "estuve más de 30 minutos recogiendo cabezas y cuerpos<BR>para una
foto, junté alrededor de 80 pero habían muchos más esparcidos sobre una<BR>área
grande. Todos estos tiburones eran juveniles y algunos estaban intactos,
asesinados<BR>innecesariamente y descartados".<BR><BR>"Lamentablemente, este no
es un hecho aislado en Costa Rica. En el Pacífico existen<BR>hasta 30 especies
de tiburones que se capturan por el alto valor de sus aletas pero<BR>también
para el consumo nacional de su carne, en especial los individuos
todavía<BR>jóvenes que no se han reproducido, como es este caso" indicó Randall
Arauz de Pretoma.<BR>"Esto demuestra una vez más la gran presión pesquera que
existe sobre los tiburones<BR>la necesidad de expandir y crear áreas marinas
protegidas en las zonas costeras<BR>mientras los tiburones se alimentan durante
sus estados juveniles" concluyó Arauz.</FONT></FONT></DIV><FONT size=4><FONT

(<I>Carcharhinus limbatus</I>) near the island of Cabuya off the Pacific coast
of Costa Rica was released to the press today by the conservation group PRETOMA,
a large and influential non-profit in Central America.</DIV>
