trabaja con los pescadores en la costa norte del Perú para conservar la
población de mantarrayas, fue galardonada por los Whitley Awards 2018. El Perú
y Ecuador son presumiblemente cuna de la mayor población de mantarrayas en el
planeta, pero el declive es cercano a 80% en 75 años. Mientras una
mantarraya muerta es valorizada en US$ 500, el turismo para apreciar
mantarrayas puede generar US$ 1 millón durante la vida de estos enigmáticos
peces. “Por primera vez los pescadores en el Perú son asistidos para el
desarrollo responsable de ecoturismo de mantarrayas. Con mayor ingreso del
turismo, los pescadores han empezado a liberar las capturas incidentales,
conscientes que las mantas son más valiosas vivas que muertas”, indicó el
periódico The Guardian de Londres. La ONG de Forsberg ya logró la protección
legal de las mantarrayas: todo un hito. El premio Whitley será destinado para
lidiar con las amenazas y captura incidental de la especie. Los pescadores
recibirán asistencia técnica y económica para beneficiarse del ecoturismo, y
cerca de 100 científicos ayudarán a monitorear y potenciar los programas de
conservación. El Whitley Awards reconoció el trabajo de seis conservacionistas
con las comunidades locales para proteger fauna amenazada y su hábitat a nivel
mundial. El prestigioso premio, conocido como los “Óscar verde”, es
convocado anualmente por la Whitley Fund for Nature y provee a los ganadores de
un financiamiento para escalar sus proyectos. </span><span style="font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Arial", "sans-serif";color:black;background:white;">Bravo. </span></p>
