Tamil Nadu: City fisherfolk unable to bank on banking facilities*

Residents of Pulicat and adjoining villages in north Chennai on Thursday
staged a protest in front of Indian Bank, demanding improved banking
facilities in their locality. They said the only bank in the area had very
few staff members, did not have a permanent manager and it lacked an ATM,
causing delays in banking operations. Jalandran Chettiyar of Lighthouse
Kuppam said it took between 15 days and one month to open a new account at
the bank...

Karnataka: Prohibitory orders extended in Udupi*

The Udupi district administration has extended prohibitory orders under
Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the coastal areas of Udupi
district from Wednesday mid night to December 20. The prohibitory orders

cuttlefish by fishermen from other states, especially from Tamil Nadu,
Kerala and Goa...

Lucknow: Chitla - the state fish of Uttar Pradesh is now critically
endangered. The fact comes from National Bureau of Fish Genetics Resources
(NBFGR), Lucknow. Till a few month ago, the fish belonged to the endangered
category. The list of endangered species in the world prepared by
International Union for conservation of nature and natural resources also
says that Chitla is endangered...

particularly in processing, marketing and research and development. The

*Sri Lanka: Forty fishermen released by Sri Lanka reach home*

Forty fishermen released on December 10 by Sri Lanka arrived at Mandapam on
Thursday. They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on December 3.  The
fishermen — 21 from Karaikal in Puducherry and 19 from Nagapattinam — set
out in five mechanised boats on November 28 and were fishing close to the
east of Sri Lankan coast, when they were arrested by the Navy in the early
hours.  After seven days of detention, they were released on December 10...
