upon officers to work with zeal for making fishing a prosperous and

unemployed youth belonging to the inland fisherman’s community. The first
of its kind, KSFCF inaugurated their maiden store called ‘Matsya Darshini’
at Mysore...

Tamil Nadu: Fishermen, held by Iran, return home *

The 26 fishermen from different parts of the district, who were detained by
Iran authorities for straying into that country's territorial waters on
October 10, 2012, returned to their villages on Tuesday. A total of 29

Thiruvananthapuram and one from Karaikkal, were jailed and some held
captive in their boats by Iranian authorities in December while Indian
officials negotiated their release...

The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has strongly recommended that sea
cucumber, a marine organism found in the coral reef areas, be retained in
Schedule I Category of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Schedule I
contains the list of most endangered species and gives them highest level
of protection. The recommendation follows a recent proposal from the Union
government to delist a few species of animals, which included the sea
cucumber, from the Act...

India: New GOI guidelines for deep sea fishing in Indian EEZ*

The Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Animal
Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries being the nodal Department for developing
fisheries in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) vide Entry 57 list 1
of Seventh Schedule of the Constitution in exercise of the powers conferred
orders hereunder prescribe the new Guidelines for conduct of fishing
operation in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone. The guidelines will be
binding on all deep-sea fishing vessels operating in the Indian EEZ from
the date of issue of this order (dated 18th January 2013). The earlier
Guidelines prescribed in above regard by this Department are rescinded
herewith…

The US International Trade Commission (USITC) will decide on February 11 if
it should impose a countervailing duty (CVD) on import of shrimp from seven
countries, including India. In the last week of December, the Coalition of
Gulf Shrimp Industries (COGSI), a local body, had filed petitions seeking
relief from subsidised shrimp imports from seven countries — China,
Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam...

Asia launches series of country surveys*

coastal small-scale fishers are among the most insecure and vulnerable in
the area. The Regional Fisheries Livelihood Programme for South and
Southeast Asia (RFLP), funded by the Kingdom of Spain and implemented by
FAO, sets out to strengthen capacity among participating small-scale
fishing communities and their supporting institutions in Cambodia,
Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam. Baseline
surveys have been undertaken for each country. To highlight the key
baseline findings and make the survey results more accessible and
understandable, graphic summaries of each survey have been produced...
