Maharashtra: 7 boats from Malpe seized by Maharashtra Coast Guards*

Seven deep sea fishing boats and fishermen from Malpe have been held by
coast guards at Maharashtra Ratnagiri coast. They were arrested for
carrying out fishing activity within 12 nautical miles from the shore.
However, Malpe fishermen claimed that they were not fishing in the
restricted area and said that the allegations against them were false. "The
police have also sold our catch worth several lacs," they alleged...

Jacinto island in the River Zuari over jurisdiction issue. PSI Nikhil

Mangalore: The Marine Fishers Identity (MFID) card issued by the ministry
of agriculture to empower Indian fisherman is fraught with error,
especially when it comes to the date of birth. MFID is a bio-metric ID card
which carries details of fishermen such as photograph, date of birth and
finger biometry. The cards are being issued to fishermen in nine coastal
states and four union territories...

Twenty-one Sri Lankan fishermen who were arrested off the Andhra Pradesh
coast, in India complain that they were treated in an inhuman manner by
prison officials of the State. They were imprisoned for 14 days on a
detention order and were later released by court. They also pointed out
that the Indian authorities ought to follow the Sri Lankan practice of
releasing those in custody within a few days and deporting them to their
respective countries...

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has asked two ministries concerned to
save the mangrove forest Sundarbans and its wildlife by curbing the passage
of ships through the UNESCO-declared World Heritage Site, official sources
said. The PMO recently asked the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF)
and the Ministry of Shipping (MoS) to take necessary steps so that vessels
run on a particular route already approved by the MoEF...

Ganjam's Rushikulya river mouth, Gahirmatha, world's largest rookery, is
expecting the marine species by month-end. The Bhitarkanika Wildlife
Division has already put in place a string of measures to facilitate safe
nesting. Going by their position in the sea, the marine turtles are
expected for the mass nesting either by end of February or early March...

Imphal, February 17, 2013: In connection with the eviction of phumdi
dwellers from Loktak Lake, a legal notice has been served on Chief Minister
O Ibobi who is also Chairman of the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) and
three other parties/individuals. In accordance with an order issued by
Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench on January 25 last year, the legal notice
was served on Ibobi and three other individuals yesterday...

The farmers of Sonmar in Sarai Ranjan block, Samastipur district, Bihar
have shown a way for productive utilization of water bodies (called chaurs)

The 5000-odd women who free-dive to collect seaweed in the Gulf of Mannar
Marine National Park off the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu find
themselves struggling for their livelihoods now that their activities have
been greatly curtailed. The Gulf of Mannar was declared a marine national
park in 1986 under India's Wildlife (Protection) Act (WLPA) of 1972, under
which resource extraction from national parks is taboo. Since 2000, seaweed
collectors and fishers have borne the brunt of the Forest Department's zeal
to implement the law...

Export of fish has been increased considerably after the implementation of
the campaign-orientated fisheries programme and the pond construction
special plan. According to the Birgunj Customs Office, some 2.6 million kg
of fish worth Rs. 184.9 million was exported in the first six months of the
current fiscal year. In the same period last year, only 276,970 kg of fish
worth. Rs 5.2 million were exported...

A group of fishermen from Sri Lanka and India clashed in Sri Lankan waters
early Sunday, a navy spokesman said. The clash occurred along the
international maritime boundary which divides both countries in the

Warnakulasuriya. Warnakulasuriya told Xinhua that they had received
information about the clash and had sent a navy boat to make inquiries and
