Chennai: Villagers in coastal Ramanathapuram district are mobilising
support to oppose the upcoming two units of 800  MW each of a thermal power
plant in Uppur close to the sea. Last week, about 500 protestors gathered
at the district collector’s office to demand that the plant be scrapped.
Speaking at a seminar on environment impact assessment in the city,
Ramanathapuram Fishermen Trade Union president A Paulsami said, this plant
will be detrimental to the livelihood of fishermen and farmers of 16
villages...

The Supreme Court on Friday questioned the government as to why it was
“dragging its feet” on the issue of setting up a special court for holding
trial of two Italian marines, accused of shooting dead two Indian
fishermen. The Supreme Court also took exception to the Centre not
following its January 18 direction to consult the Chief Justice of India to
set up a special court to try the case. “Why the Centre is dragging its
feet? Nobody has made attempt for consultation for setting up of court,” a

Mumbai: The Indian Navy carried out a successful search and rescue
operation (SAR) saving all the nine crew of a fishing trawler Kadal Matha
in the high seas 240 nautical miles north-west of Goa. It acted on a
distress message sent by the trawler at 1100 hours on 25 February, and
relayed by the Coast Guard Regional Head Quarters (West). The Western Naval
Command at Mumbai directed its unit, Indian Naval Ship Nashak, operating
near the area to locate and render assistance...

*Gujarat: Pakistan to hand over 11 Indian prisoners on Friday *

Pakistani authorities will hand over 11 Indian prisoners, including seven
fishermen, to Indian authorities at the Wagah land border crossing

bus to Lahore. The four other Indians would be released from jails in
Lahore, officials of the Indian High Commission told PTI...

Twenty-one fishermen detained by the Tamil Nadu Coastguard on the
allegation of trespassing will return to the country on February 27.  Four

Karachi:  Judicial Magistrate (West) Azizullah Khoso on Friday ordered 25

police, who registered a case against them under the Fisheries Act and the

*Nepal: IB all set to introduce fisheries insurance *

Kathmandu: The Insurance Board, the insurance sector regulator, has
finalized a policy on fisheries insurance that will soon make it mandatory
for all non-life insurance companies to provide coverage to fishes grown in
ponds of at least 200 sq m. The measure is expected to provide cushion to
fish farmers in case of damages or losses of their products and pave the
way for banks and financial institutions to open the floodgates for credit
into the sector...
