*Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Twelve sites added to UNESCO’s World
Biosphere Reserve Network *

The International Coordinating Council of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere
Programme (MAB), which met in Paris from 27 to 30 May, has added 12 sites
to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The additions bring the total
number of biosphere reserves to 621 in 117 countries...

*Diu and Daman: 45 Indian fishermen hailing from Diu, Maharashtra, and
Gujarat were released by Pakistan*

Vadodara: 45 Indian fishers who were released by Pakistan will reach
Veraval on Tuesday. They hail from Maharashtra, the union territory of Diu
and various parts of Gujarat. Gujarat fisheries  department official V J
Moile, who is accompanying the released persons in the Vadodara-bound
Golden Express train from Amritsar, said today, "We will reach Vadodara
around midnight tonight and after a night halt at Vadodara, we will leave
for Veraval tomorrow morning...

Aaranyak, a conservation group, has urged Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to
initiate urgent steps to ensure protection and conservation of Deepor Beel.
Aaranyak which was observing the International Day for Biological Diversity

concern at the deteriorating state of wetlands in Guwahati in particular
and in Assam in general...

The Porbandar Macchimar Boat Association has written to UPA chairperson
Sonia Gandhi and prime minister Manmohan Singh highlighting the plight of

Jungi, former president of the association, has expressed fear that many
Indian fishermen in Pakistani jails may meet the fate of Sarabjit Singh as
they are being subjected to inhuman treatment...

*Gujarat: 33,000 fishing boats will have alert button*

All the 33,000 sea-going mechanised boats in the state will be equipped
with satellite-based distress alert transmitters (DAT) in a phased manner.
The initiative has been taken by the Gujarat Fisheries Central Cooperative
Association(GFCCA), an apex cooperative body of the state fisheries
department, to prevent capture of Indian fishing boats by Pakistani coastal
guards as also tackling other emergencies like fire on board, medical
assistance, sinking or any other emergency...

government has notified the natural calamity relief to fishermen scheme.

equipments due to natural calamity including floods, cyclone, tsunami,
accidental fire, etc...

*Karnataka: Karnataka to get first marine national park*

march and dharna staged in front of the Secretariat...

(special branch), IB, and the Fisheries Department to look into the illegal
entry of foreign fishermen into Indian waters...

May 29 (Reuters) - The U.S. Commerce Department on Wednesday set
preliminary duties of up to nearly 63 percent on shrimp from Malaysia to
offset government subsidies, but much lower duties on shrimp from China,
India, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Ecuador. The duties, which could be
revised in August when the department completes an investigation, were
welcomed by shrimp fisherman and processors in Texas, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina who filed a
petition last year seeking U.S. protection against foreign subsidized
competition...

*Sri Lanka: Kalpitiya fishermen’s livelihood disrupted*

Pakistan: KFHA stops issuing port clearance papers *

Karachi Fish Harbour Authority (KFHA) on Tuesday stopped issuing port
clearance documents to fishing vessels, asking coastal and maritime
departments to stop all boats from going out to the sea. "The KFHA has

customs (officials) to stop boats," officials said on Tuesday...
