*Tamil Nadu: A 1000 km protection wall along the entire Tamil Nadu coast*

Translated by ICSF a news article from Dinakaran dated 29 May 2013.

Chennai. May 29: The Tamil Nadu goverment has ordered the construction of a
wall to protect the coast from erosion, starting from Chennai and ending in
Kanyakumari – a distance of 1000 km. The government has ordered a wall to
be built, that can withstand the eroding power of the waves. The wall will
be constructed in 3 layers – core, armory and side slope. The wall will be
2 m high; the height will vary according to the area. Tamil Nadu has 13
coastal districts with a coastline of 1076 km. The entire length of the
coastline will be protected by the wall. In areas lacking the sand for
construction, rocks shall be used. The first phase of the project will
begin in Chennai’s Ennore and Nettukuppam since they have areas where
houses have been affected by coastal erosion. Orders have been issued to
the concerned departments.

The first section will cost Rs 7.15 crores, the 2nd Rs 4.74 crores, the
third Rs 8.62 crores and the fourth Rs 4.8 crores. Areas with harbours are
already protected and therefore walls will not be built there. Similarly,
the Marina and Besant Nagar beaches, Protected areas like Mahabalipuram
beach, areas which are under archaeological control, areas with a calm sea
will not have protection walls. The wall will be built in areas with
habitation, shops, and where many fishing boats are parked. The project is
being rapidly implemented by the public works department and the water
resources department.
