Imphal, May 25 2013 : The shortage of over 40,000 metric tonnes of fishes
in the State has compelled to import the deficient quantity of fishes from
other states at a staggering amount of Rs.400 crores annually, according to
an official source from the State Fisheries Department. This huge
expenditure on importing fishes is a set back on the economy of the State
whose annual plan outlay is just Rs.3650 crores...

said to be 'seriously ill'. "As the Karachi-Mumbai flight was cancelled, he

India: The US's countervailing duty should not affect shrimp exports much *

The US government has imposed a 5.91 per cent countervailing duty on shrimp
from India but it is unlikely to impact the volume of shrimp exported to
the US, India’s number one shrimp market. The new duty combined with the
existing 3.5 per cent duty means exporters now have to pay nearly 9 per
cent of the value of their shipments to the US Customs and Border Patrol at
the port of entry, before they make any money back on their product. This
additional cost will most likely will be paid by shrimp producers...

In a move to prevent further declines of fish stocks, the Ministry of
Livestock and Fisheries cut by 25 percent the number of licences it handed
out to fishing boats for the monsoon fishing season, which started on June
1. The move follows an announcement by the ministry in April that the
length of the season – one of three annually – would be cut from 90 to 45
days, following reports from industry groups warning that fish stocks are
declining...

Almost 2,000 fish cages fell into disuse in the last 7 months. Almost two
thousand fish cages used in mono-sex tilapia farming was not being put into
use in the last seven months in Chandpur due to poor water quality
resulting in fish diseases and high feeding costs.  Farmers, who once found
the new fishing method easy, low-cost and profitable, are left with limited
options to choose from as the country’s overall aquaculture industry
suffers a downturn...
