president, Association of Indian Fishery Industry, and added lack of
transportation was the prime concern for buyers, forcing even boat

amalgamated creek, river and estuary in the CRZ line. This, state officials

Alappuzha: Protesting against the central and State Government’s apathy
towards the fish workers, Kerala Swanthanthra Matsya Thozhulali Federation
(KSMTF) along with National Fish workers Forum (NFF) held a protest rally
and a public meeting today at Alappuzha District in Kerala.

Thousands of the fish workers from ten coastal state participated in the
rally which began at the Collectorate in Alappuzha and culminated at Town
square. The public meeting was inaugurated by R. K Patil, (Chairperson of
NFF), P.P John, (President of KSMTF) presided the meeting, M.Ilango
(General Secretary of NFF) inaugurated the KSMTF Public fund collection
initiative “One fish for one crore”. T Peter Secretary of NFF gave the
national call for action. T J Angelos Ex. MP, Dr.Varghese George, Debasish
Shyamal ( West Bengal) M Ramajayam (Pondicherry), Ahmed Manjalia (
Gujarat), Narayan Chandra Halder ( Odisha ) Olencio Simoes (Goa), Anotn
Gomez ( Tamil Nadu ) , Paul Sami (Tamil Nadu), Vasudev Bolhar (Karnataka),
Shiwaji (AP), Purnima Mehar (Maharshtra), S. Stephen, M Ambrose, Magline
Peter, P. V Wilson, P.I Benny, Anto Elias, Babu Ottamasseri (Kerala) spoke
at the public meeting. Jackson Pollayil (General Secretary KSMTF) welcomed
the gathering.

The Demands raised were:

1. Immediately stop the Cargo Ship’s route in the inshore waters which
causes hindrance for the fishing activities of the traditional fisher
workers.

2. Cancel the Sea plane project which a direct threat to livelihoods of the
inland fishing community.

3. Strictly implement the banning of Coastal sand mining on the Sea Shores
as ordered by the National Green Tribunal.

4. Setting up of a separate Ministry for fisheries.

5.  Provide 10 cents of land which includes house to rehabilitate the
family of the Fishworkers’ residing near the areas prone to Sea erosion to
secure the livelihood and fishing activates.

6. Stop commissioning the plan of gas pipe line through costal water
contacting Cochi LNG terminal to the Kayamkulam thermal Power plant.

7. Stop Sea reclamation.

8. Declare the accidents of Fishworkers in the Sea; fatal injury and death
caused due to thunders and lightening and Tsunami, Cyclone, storm and loss
of livelihood by sea erosion must be defined as natural calamities buy the
central government.

9. Immediately address the issues of Jambudip, West Bengal and save the
livelihood of 20,000 fisher people.

10. Withdraw fishing ban in the districts of Puri, Ganjam, and Kendra Parda
for traditional fish worker in the name of turtle conservation.

11. Withdraw fishing Ban in 21 Islands of Rameshwram in Tamil Nadu in the
name of marine protected area.

12. Immediately stop the Setu Samudram Canal project which affects the
lively hood of five lakhs Fishworkers belonging to five costal district of
Tami Nadu.

13. Stop letter of permit ( LOP) to foreign fishing vessels to Indian
water.

14. Ensure fishing rights in Sundarban reserve forest.

15. Stop destructive fishing gears in Indian water.

16. Retrieve Katchatheevu Island from Srilanka to ensure the livelihood of
Tamil Fishermen and to settle day to day arrest of Tamil fishermen by Sir
Lankan Navy.

17. Stop extortion by Naval oil rig security guards in the Bombay high
seas.

18. NFF rally and public meeting request the Honorable Prime Minister of
India and GOI to take immediate steps to stop continuous atrocities by Sri
Lankan Navy upon Indian Tamil fishermen, Also request to take diplomatic
and immediate steps to release the imprisoned fishermen and Boats Seized by
Sri Lankan Government.

19. Diesel should be supplied to the traditional fish workers for their
Boats at the cost price i.e without excise duties and sales tax.

20. For outboard engines the kerosene should be supplied on PDS rates to
small and traditional fisher people.

21. We demand waiver of loans for fisher people on par with the farmers and
loans should be provided at the interest of 4% per Annum (differential rate
of interest) to fishers and their co-operative societies for mechanization
of boats, ice plants, developing markets, housing, cold storage, retail
fish outlets and jewel loans for fisher’s working capital through
Nationalized Banks, Cooperatives Bank, Private Banks NCDC, NABARD and NFDB.

Action Plan

•  October 7th to 10th - Meeting with political leaders of all parties in
Delhi demanding the Fishworkers’ concerns to be included in the manifesto
for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

•  October last week - NFF State units will be submitting by Fishworkers’
concerns to the regional and National parties.

•  November 4th to 8th - 101 hours sit –in Dharna in front of Trivandrum
secretariat to highlight the demands of the fishing community.

•  November 21st - On world fisheries day all coastal state will held
demonstration and Dharna at the State offices highlighting the demands of
the fishing community.

•  December 6th to 8th - NFF General Body meeting will announce the further
action plan keeping in mind the upcoming parliamentary elections.
