*Odisha: Fisherman gunned down in a mid sea gun battle at the Gahiramatha
marine sanctuary of Odisha*
By Ashis Senapati
ashissenapati3 en gmail.com
In a mid-sea gun battle , a marine fisherman was gunned down and two
sustained gun shot injuries by the armed forest guards on Sunday in the
deep sea about five nautical miles from Talachua coast within Gahiramatha
marine sanctuary in Kendrapada district of Odisha . The deceased
fisherman has been identified as Sk. Akbar (21) of Sailendranagar village
under Dangamala Gram Panchayat of Rajnagar police station, said Rabi
Narayan Behera the Superintendent of Police of Kendrapada.
Crews of around 15 fishing trawlers on Sunday afternoon attacked
forest guards and took possession of one of their patrol vessels in
the “Fishing Ban “ areas on the sea. Fishermen also reportedly took
hostage around 10 forest guards for over three hours and sank off one of
the petrol boats, added the police officer. Both the forest vessels were
engaged in turtle protection drive when a fleet of fishing trawlers chased
the patrol vessels. The patrolling vessels rushed to the prohibited areas
to nab the crew members of the trawlers. But they attacked forest guards
for which in a self defence, forest guards opened fire and gunned down a
fisherman, added the police officer.
However, Nashir Ali Khan one of the crew members of the trawler stated “
We were returning from the sea after fishing on the sea beyond the marine
sanctuary areas. But the forest guards apprehended us and opened fire as a
result on fisherman died”.
On Monday, large numbers of fishermen demonstrated in front of the office
of divisional forest officer (DFO) at Rajnagar and demanded stern action
against the forest guards who shot dead him.
Meanwhile, Nashir Ali Khan one of the crew members of the trawler filed an
FIR in the marine police station at Jamboo on Monday and alleged that some
of the armed security forces gunned down a crew member. On the other hand ,
Suvendu Behera the forest range officer of Gahiramatha marine sanctuary
filed an FIR in Jamboo marine police station and stated that around 50 crew
members of 12 trawlers attacked them in mid sea . They also sank off one of
their petrol boats. Security forces forced to open fire to save themselves.
The Gahiramatha beach is the largest rookery of the Olive Ridley sea
turtles and authority banned fishing from 1st November to 31st May within
20 km from the coast in the Gahiramatha marine sanctuary to save the
endangered marine species. Since the enforcement of fishing ban from 1st
November last year, 138 marine fishermen have so far been taken into
custody and 26 fishing crafts have been seized for unlawful fishing
activity within the jurisdiction of Gahirmatha marine sanctuary.
The Coast Guard officials of port town Paradip have also deployed a ship to
protect the turtles and to nab the fishermen who fish within the banned
areas in the sea, said the forest officer. Palpable tension mounted in the
seaside fishing villages of the district after news spread about the
killing of a fisherman by the forest guards. It may be noted that in 2005
, the forest guards had shot dead a fisherman from West Bengal when he and
other fishermen were illegally fishing within the Gahiramatha marine
sanctuary. In 2006, Bikash Das a marine fisherman of Kharinashi village had
also been killed in Gahiramatha marine sanctuary when he was fishing in
the prohibited areas. In 2002 a forest guard, Shyamasundar Singh was killed
by some fishermen on the sea within the Gahirmatha sanctuary when he along
with three forest guards were trying to nab some fishermen .
