Queridos amigos,

 

Les escribo como antigua amiga de Punta San Juan (PSJ), para pedirles ayuda para proteger el Programa PSJ. Como bien saben, PSJ es el hogar de LA colonia más importante de pingüinos de Humboldt en Perú, y una de las más importantes del mundo, y un sitio reproductivo crítico para una variedad de otras aves marinas, incluidas las tres especies de aves guaneras, y para ambas especies de focas en el Perú: lobos finos y lobos chuscos de América del Sur. Un factor importante que contribuye a la presencia y persistencia de estas colonias de aves marinas y focas ha sido la presencia permanente de científicos asociados al Programa PSJ durante casi 40 años. La vigilancia adicional proporcionada por los científicos residentes y visitantes que trabajan durante todo el año en el sitio ha mantenido fuera a los cazadores furtivos y depredadores del sitio y ha permitido que la vida silvestre prospere en el PSJ.

 

AGRORURAL, la Agencia Gubernamental a cargo de la explotación del guano de aves marinas en Perú ha sido durante años un socio estratégico del Programa PSJ, apoyándose mutuamente en formas que han permitido y facilitado la presencia de los Científicos PSJ en el sitio y, a su vez, han mejorado y mantenido la infraestructura y han asesorado a AGRORURAL y han brindado apoyo para minimizar el impacto de la cosecha de guano en la vida silvestre local. Por alguna razón que aún no sabemos, la administración actual de AGRORURAL primero, se estancó durante meses y dejó que el acuerdo con el programa PSJ expire y, de repente, le dio al programa 5 días para salir de PSJ. Después de conversaciones tensas, les han dado unos días más y les han dicho que se muden antes del 5 de diciembre. La excusa que dan para esta decisión es que la casa es inhabitable (sin una inspección adecuada o ningún documento que lo demuestre) o que no han cumplido con el acuerdo, a pesar de que el programa ha presentado religiosamente todos los informes requeridos y ha respondido a todas las solicitudes de apoyo que se les ha solicitado.

 

Entonces, por favor ayúdenos a presionar al Director de Guano de AGRORURAL, así como a sus superiores, el Director Ejecutivo de AGRORURAL y al Ministro de Agricultura, haciéndoles saber por qué es importante mantener el programa PSJ en PSJ y la relevancia de El sitio para el mundo.

Puedes escribir en español o en inglés, no importa, lo importante es sumergirlos en correos electrónicos de todo el mundo. Hágales saber que el mundo se preocupa por PSJ y reconoce el papel del Programa PSJ en la conservación de la vida silvestre en PSJ y en muchos otros sitios, ya que los cientos de personas que han ido y trabajado allí se han extendido por todo el mundo contribuyendo a la conservación de los innumerables sitios en los que terminaron.

 

Háganlo CUANTO ANTES ya que la fecha límite para que el Programa se modifique se acerca rápidamente.

Subject: URGENT!!! Punta San Juan threatened



Dear Friends,

 

I’m writing to you as a longtime friend of Punta San Juan (PSJ), to ask for your help to protect the PSJ Program. As you well know, PSJ is home of THE most important colony of Humboldt penguins in Peru – and one of the most important in the World – and a critical reproductive site for a variety of other seabirds, including the three species of guano birds, and for both species of seals in Peru: S. American fur seals and sea lions. An important factor contributing to the presence and persistence of these seabird and seal colonies has been the permanent presence of scientists associated to the PSJ Program for almost 40 years now. The additional vigilance provided by the resident and visiting scientists working through the year at the site has kept poachers and predators from the site and allowed wildlife to thrive at PSJ.

 

AGRORURAL, the Government Agency in charge of the exploitation of seabird guano in Peru has for years been a strategic partner to the PSJ Program, supporting each other in ways that have allowed and facilitated the presence of the PSJ Scientists at the site and in turn, they have improved and maintained the infrastructure and have advised AGRORURAL and provided support to minimize the impact of guano harvesting on the local wildlife. For some reason we don’t know yet, the current administration of AGRORURAL first, stalled for months and left the agreement with the PSJ program expire and, suddenly, gave the program 5 days to move out of PSJ. After tense conversations, they have given them a few more days and told them to move out by Dec. 5. The excuse they give for this decision is that the house is uninhabitable (without a proper inspection or any document to prove it) or that they have not complied with the agreement – even though the program has religiously submitted all required reports and responded to all requests for support they have been asked for.

 

So, please help us pressure the Director for Guano of AGRORURAL, as well as to his superiors, the Executive Director of AGRORURAL and to the Minister of Agriculture, letting them know why it is important to keep the PSJ program at PSJ and the relevance of the site for the world.

You can write in Spanish or English, it doesn’t really matter – the thing is to drown them in emails from around the world. Let them know the world cares about PSJ and recognize the role of the PSJ Program in the conservation of the wildlife at PSJ and many other sites – as the hundreds of people that have gone and worked there have spread around the world contributing to the conservation of the myriad sites they ended up in.

 

Please do it ASAP as the deadline for the Program to move is quickly approaching.
