Port Blair: The Early Tsunami Warning System installed at Rangachang in
Andaman and Nicobar Islands can predict a tsunami immediately after an
earthquake, Chief Scientist of National Institute of Ocean Technology
Vinith Kumar said.  "The system can predict tsunami within 3 minutes after
the occurrence of the initial tremors and send alerts," he said addressing
a meet held at Dollygunj here yesterday...

activities in Gomti river. This is after thousands of fishes were found
dead and floating on the river surface two days back, after the brief

into the mysterious death of so many fishes...

Bhubaneswar: After a recent decision to provide a dedicated feeder line for
agriculture purposes, the state government has planned to provide such
facility for fishery clusters too, official sources said. The energy
secretary, P K Jena, on June 8 in a letter to CESU and power distribution
companies NESCO and SOUTHCO, asked them to submit their plan and estimate
for the proposed feeder line within a week and not after June 18, sources
said. He said they have not responded despite several discussions...

Pudimadaka and other areas have launched a fast-unto-death in front of the
main gate of Brandix India Apparel City (BIAC) at Atchutapuram near here
demanding jobs for those displaced by the project.  The fast, which was
launched under the aegis of Matsyakarula Matsya Karmika Sangham and SEZ
Nirvasita Samkhema Sangham, entered the second day on Thursday...

Thiruvananthapuram coast from Valiathura to Puthukurichy. The KSBB has

hours fearing the Sri Lankan navy, the fishers at Rameswaram backtracked on
their decision and decided to stick on to their regular schedule.
Mechanised boats at Rameswaram fishinh harbour will enter sea on a 24-hour
schedule from early morning to next day morning. It was decided to cut the
trawling duration to 14 hours from last Saturday based on a resolution
taken during the association meeting...

solar-biomass hybrid dryer which can dry fish in 20 hours under hygienic

sector. The European Union funded project is in operation at the college
since May last year. The Euro 39,65,592 project involves 13 institutions
including four small and medium entrepreneurs...

*Gujarat: 12 Pakistani fishermen apprehended off Gujarat coast*

Jamnagar: The Indian Coast Guard today apprehended 12 Pakistani fishermen
and impounded their boat 38 nautical miles off the International Maritime
Boundary Line (IMBL) near Jakhau coast, Gujarat.  This being a non-fishing
season due to the monsoon, the boat aroused suspicion, ICG sources said.
Kutch police had located the boat 'Rehman Baba' in Indian waters on Monday.
An ICG helicopter traced it today...

year. Of the 100 million sharks killed last year, according to the FAO, 70
million were killed in Indian waters. Of the 368 species of sharks in the

Livestock and Fisheries cut by 25 percent the number of licences it handed
out to fishing boats for the monsoon fishing season, which started on June
1. The move follows an announcement by the ministry in April that the
length of the season – one of three annually – would be cut from 90 to 45
days, following reports from industry groups warning that fish stocks are
declining...

The Director General of Fisheries S.T Hettiarachchi said that attention has
been focused to provide some compensation to the families of the victimized
fishermen of the recent unfavorable weather condition in addition to the
compensations that will be provided by the Disaster Management Center. The
proposal relating to this will be submitted to the cabinet shortly...

Storms and adverse weather conditions have hit Sri Lanka since Saturday
early morning, and, according to a release from the National Fisheries
Solidarity Movement (NAFSO), the rough seas have destroyed more than 60
fishermen's lives around the West, South/West and Southern coasts in Sri
Lanka. According to Herman Kumara, Convener, NAFSO, some of the media
messages say there are 31 including 30 fisher people dead, 29 injured and
31 missing people, including 37 boats that disappeared...
