A sailing vessel transporting construction materials from Mangalore to
Lakshadweep sunk seven nautical miles away from the island on October 25.
While two of the five sailors, all hailing from Tuticorin were rescued, the
fate of the remaining three is yet to be known...

*Jammu and Kashmir: Fish production in JK reaches 20,000 MT*

to 19.95 thousand metric tonnes, Fisheries Department today said. It said

Hit by twin calamities of cyclone Phailin and two phases of flood, the
Odisha government today asked the banks to extend helping hands in

additional chief secretary, Finance Department after an emergent meeting of
State Level Bankers' Committee here...

Godavari district were damaged due to heavy rains for the last six days.

I. Polavaram, Katrenikona, Uppalaguptam, Allavaram, Mamidikuduru,
Malikipuram and Sakhinetipalli, have lost hopes about their seed which is
growing fast till last week...

As many as 48 Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) violations were found in a
survey taken up recently in Prakasam and Nellore. It may be mentioned here
that CRZ pertains ban on any activity in places that are ecologically

instance CRZ-I pertains to 0 to 100 metres to the seacoast. CRZ-II related
to areas that have already been developed up to or close to the shoreline...

Finally the power crisis is affecting even the fisherman!. From 14-11-2008,
thousands of fishermen from all over Tamil Nadu went on an indefinite
strike as ice plants supplying ice blocks used to preserve fish, will
remain closed from 15-11-2008 . Fishermen said they could not venture into
the sea without the blocks as fish have to be preserved for use and also
sent to other parts of the state...

A new more precise sales system which is more transparent at the time of
quantifying fish catch will finally be implemented in the state of Kerala,
in South-West India, coming into effect from 1 November. It is expected
that this system, which is considered more suitable than a more primitive
one by which bulk sales were only based on rough calculations, will bring
to an end counter-charges of exploitation and losses, reports The Hindu...

*Karnataka: Empty lakes, a blow to inland fisheries*

Only 34 lakes in the district have sufficient water for raising fish, due
to deficient rains, which has become a major setback for inland fisheries.
In all, there are 95 lakes in the district — Kollegal-26, Yalandur-18,
Chamarajanagar-32 and Gundlupet-19. The Fisheries department had set a goal
to distribute 65 lakh fish fry for raising. Fish fry are being supplied
from Gundal and Kabini centres at H D Kote...

lapses in the supervision of Tata Power’s ultra mega power project (UMPP)

of the project’s environment and social assessments was not commensurate
with the risk, as required by IFC’s sustainability policy...

* Sri Lanka: New legislation requires Sri Lankan fishermen operating in
high seas to obtain licenses*

mandatory for fishermen operating in high seas to obtain licenses. The
government is considering to introduce the new legislation according to the

* Pakistan: Big rise in fish exports *

Fish exports are growing fast after the six-year-old EU ban was lifted on
shipments to EU member countries in March this year and due to larger sales
in China and Vietnam. Exports of fish and fish preparations exceeded 36,000

year-ago period...

* Bangladesh: 133 fishermen held in three dists for defying hilsha ban*

Bangladesh Coastguard and Fisheries Department in separate drives arrested
133 fishermen in the Bay of Bengal and rivers in Barguna, Munshiganj and
Bagerhat for catching hilsha defying October 13-23 ban, reports UNB. In
Barguna, a mobile court in an overnight drive Tuesday arrested 52 fishermen
onboard four trawlers for catching hilsha in Pakhidia area of the Bay of
Bengal...

*Myanmar: Severing Thais: fisheries agreement expires *

Thai fishing boats will not be able to trawl Myanmar’s territorial waters
from March 2014 when a current agreement expires, a spokesperson for the
Myanmar Fisheries Federation said in a meeting last week. The decision

concerning Thai fishing rights in Nay Pyi Taw last week...
