National Human Rights Commission Chairman and former Chief Justice of

statements submitted concerning the grievances faced by the Phumdi dwellers

India’s government has proposed building nearly 300 dams throughout the
Himalayan range by 2030 to help meet its energy needs, which are under

released by a group of scientists at National University of Singapore

The steep increase in diesel price has left fishermen red-faced with a call
by the Association of Indian Fisheries Industry (AIFI) to mechanised boat
operators in the country to terminate their voyage and return to the shore
immediately. Fuming with anger, AIFI president Y.G.K. Murti on Saturday
rushed to Kolkata to hold meeting with the fishermen leaders in West Bengal
and Odisha. “The exorbitant hike in diesel price will paralyse the industry
at a time when we are trying to limp back to normalcy,” he said...

With the trawler owners not getting any assurance from the union petroleum
ministry, the fish markets are likely to reopen on Thursday. Sources in the
federation, however, indicated that the trawler strike had not been
withdrawn. The all-Goa fishermen federation called on Union petroleum
minister Veerappa Moily and placed before him their grievances seeking
relief for trawler owners. Another round of talks is likely to be held on
Thursday...

An understanding on compensation has been reached between representatives
of the Panamian-flagged Japanese cargo vessel, ‘M V Izumo’ and various
unions in connection with the hit-and-run case off the Kozhikode coast on
January 16. As per the agreement reached at a meeting at the office of
former state industries minister Elamaram Kareem, MLA, in Kozhikode
yesterday, the owners of the ship will pay a compensation of Rs 19.5 lakh
to the three fishermen who had a miraculous escape after the ship rammed
their fishing vessel ‘Al Ameen’, officials said...

Minister Sharad Pawar and Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily to demand
subsidy on diesel to seagoing fishermen who purchase diesel at retail rate
at beaches. “The recent price hike of Rs 10 to Rs 15  per litre for bulk
purchase of diesel will severely hit the small and traditional fishing
communities who collect diesel from the petrol pumps of the marine
fisheries cooperative societies...

New Delhi: In  a joint venture, both India and Sri Lanka  have decided to
settle for an agreement, drawing a fishing boundary in the Palk Strait
which  would possibly bring to a halt  the frequent attacks on Tamil Nadu
fishermen by the island navy, said Minister of State in PMO V.
Narayanasamy. While talking to reporters Narayanasamy said, the proposed
agreement has been agreed by both India and Sri Lanka which is in a closing
stage...

Over-exploitation of coastal waters also leading to fast depletion of
maritime resources. Poor post-harvest fish handling infrastructure in major
maritime states is causing an annual loss of over Rs 15,000 crore to
India’s marine and inland fisheries sector. This is about 25% of the Indian
fish and marine industry which is worth over Rs 61,000 crore, according to
a study conducted by industry body Associated Chambers of Commerce and
Industry of India (Assocham)...

attack by a band of robbers in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday morning.
Eighteen fishermen were returning to the shores from the deep sea around
10:00am on their fishing boat Senowara-2 when robbers swooped on them and
shot rubber bullets indiscriminately...
